Identity of the Hand

My inspiration for this project was the idea of the feminine hand as a symbol of fragility, daintiness and glamour. Using photography as my medium (with some help from Photoshop), I wanted to portray a stereotype that has always surrounded me as a woman. From a young age, girls are expected to visit the nail salon for special occasions and to keep their hands in a perfectly manicured condition. I pose my hand so it looks almost like a wax figure (clearly evidenced in the reflection), with my fingers elongated in a superficial and unnatural stance. I continue to expand on this idea of femininity with my hand emerging into a sea of rhinestones, perfectly placed on each of my fingers as an expression of garish jewelry.
